Yesterday was the three week anniversary of my planting my first tree. I am so pleased with how it is turning out, I am very glad that I did this. The tree is an orange "Geiger" tree, a native of Florida (where I live) and grows to about 30-35 feet high, with a spread of 25-30 feet wide. It has orange blossoms twice a year (spring and summer) and also has small, fragrant pear shapped fruit about two inches long after the blossoms occur.
When I brought it home it had no leaves on it at all, and as my friend remarked " You got yerself a real nice Charlie Brown Christmas tree there pal".
As you can see, leaves are sprouting up nicely at the top, and there are a lot of little tiny buds all along the trunk. I really can't wait for this thing to get gigantic - and believe me, everything in Florida tends to get gigantic and fast. Tons of sunshine, rain almost everyday...what more could a tree ask for ?
It feels good to do something environmentally friendly, to give back to the Earth that has given so much to us. The best part about this: it was completely free. I attended the Heathcote Botanical Gardens Tree "giveaway" and the only requirements were that you attend a series of 10 minute lectures on everything from planting, to pruning, watering, site location etc.
All told I spent about 1.5 hours at the seminar, and about 2 hours digging and planting. The tree stands about 4 1/2 feet tall now, it has grown almost a FOOT in height since I brought it home.
Scan your local papers for a free tree give away in your local area and get to it !! :)

That's pretty neat, but there is no way that I'd be able to keep it alive. I kill every plant I own.
Cuppy, thanks for stopping by ! And you too can have a green thumb...you just need to focus...there's a phone booth at the corner of wells and lake...
Err, yes :)
Good post.
